In recent years, the surge in the use of e-cigarettes has piqued the interest of many looking to understand how these devices function effectively. At their core, e-cigarettes, also known as electronic cigarettes, are devices designed to deliver nicotine without the need for combustion associated with traditional cigarettes. Their mechanism is both intriguing and complex, incorporating various components that work harmoniously to produce vapor inhaled by users.
Components of E-cigarettes
E-cigarettes consist of several key parts that include a battery, a heating element, often called a coil, and a cartridge or tank that holds e-liquid. This e-liquid typically contains nicotine, flavorings, and other additives.
The battery in e-cigarettes is typically rechargeable and powers the heating element. When the user activates the device, usually by pressing a button or inhaling through the mouthpiece, the battery sends energy to the coil. This process heats the e-liquid converting it into vapor which is then inhaled.
How E-liquid becomes Vapor
The transformation of e-liquid into vapor is a critical part of how e-cigarettes work. The coil heats to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the liquid but below the level needed to burn. This avoids the production of tar and many of the harmful by-products found in traditional cigarette smoke.
It is essential that the coil and wick, usually made from cotton, work together to absorb e-liquid evenly. This ensures consistent vapor production with every puff. As the coil heats, it vaporizes the liquid absorbed by the wick, creating the “smoke” or vapor that users inhale.
Nicotine Delivery
Nicotine is delivered through the vapor when inhaled. Unlike traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes offer the user control over the amount of nicotine consumed in each session. Many e-liquids come in varying nicotine concentrations, allowing users to choose their preferred level.
